September 11, Day of Remembrance in Barnstable Village

There will be a joint ceremony to commemorate the 13th anniversary of  September 11 at the Barnstable Fire Department and St. Mary’s Episcopal Church on Thursday, Sept. 11 in Barnstable Village.

The ceremony  will begin at 4:00 PM at the Fire Station on Rt 6A and  feature music,  reflection and the Fire Fighters’ Prayer. The ceremony will be led by Barnstable Fire  Department Deputy Chief Peter Burke. The featured vocalist is   9- year old  Alayna Rooney of South Yarmouth and the Nathaniel H. Wixon Innovation School. This takes place in front of the fire station.

At the conclusion of  the ceremony, all are invited to join the short procession up Rt 6A to St Mary’s Church. This will be led by Dave Knauer on the bagpipe, the Barnstable Police Department Color Guard and  Barnstable fire fighters and dignitaries.

The service at St Mary’s will start at 4:30 PM. and feature St. Mary’s choir under the direction of Doug Keilitz, special readings and honored guests. The two  special  speakers will be Cyndy Jones of Mashpee, a Gold Star Mom who lost her only son in Afghanistan. Since then she and her husband, Ken, began “ Heroes in Transition”, an organization that aids veterans transitioning back from active duty.
Pastor Kristen Harper of the Unitarian Church in Barnstable will also speak at the service.  Additionally, retired  West Barnstable Fire Chief John Jenkins will perform his  renowned 9/11  Tribute.  The Rev. Dr. Libby Gibson  will preside over the service.

All are invited to gather after the service in the stunning  church gardens for fellowship, support and light refreshments.
